Grape Price in Belgium (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average grape import price amounted to $2,531 per ton, declining by -5% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 89% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,159 per ton. From January 2023 to August 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Netherlands ($3,081 per ton) and Spain ($3,000 per ton), while the price for France ($2,220 per ton) and Italy ($2,224 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Grape Price in Belgium (FOB) - 2023
The average grape export price stood at $2,755 per ton in August 2023, approximately reflecting the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a prominent expansion from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +6.9% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, grape export price decreased by -18.9% against June 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 70% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3,395 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($3,447 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($1,730 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+11.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Grape Imports in Belgium
For the fourth year in a row, Belgium recorded growth in supplies from abroad of grapes, which increased by 22% to 58K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, grape imports contracted modestly to $114M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 8.8%.
