Frozen Freshwater Fish Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average frozen freshwater fish import price stood at $4,211 per ton in July 2023, increasing by 11% against the previous month. Over the period from July 2022 to July 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 an increase of 29% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $4,544 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($4,483 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($1,436 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Frozen Freshwater Fish Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023
The average frozen freshwater fish export price stood at $2,758 per ton in July 2023, picking up by 31% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a temperate expansion from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, frozen freshwater fish export price increased by +31.1% against June 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 an increase of 45% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in July 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($9,866 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($916 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Frozen Freshwater Fish Imports in Japan
In 2022, supplies from abroad of frozen freshwater fish decreased by -7.7% to 73K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.4% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 85K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, frozen freshwater fish imports reduced modestly to $274M in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable decline. The smallest decline of -1.5% was in 2021.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year.
In value terms, frozen freshwater fish exports declined modestly to $81M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15%.
