Folding Boxboard Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023
The average folding boxboard import price stood at $1,589 per ton in July 2023, falling by -7.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 18% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,740 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($3,624 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($687 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Folding Boxboard Price in Australia (FOB) - 2023
The average folding boxboard export price stood at $562 per ton in July 2023, picking up by 3.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 5.6% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $779 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($831 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($449 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Folding Boxboard Imports in Australia
In 2022, overseas purchases of folding boxboard decreased by -1% to 223K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 17%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 225K tons, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, folding boxboard imports rose sharply to $356M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
