Flax Fiber Price in Russia (FOB) - 2022
The average flax fiber export price stood at $1,461 per ton in January 2022, picking up by 4% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2021 an increase of 33% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,663 per ton. From March 2021 to January 2022, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Latvia ($1,961 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($801 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2021 to January 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Flax Fiber Price in Russia (CIF) - 2022
The average flax fiber import price stood at $956 per ton in January 2022, declining by -11.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2021 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,081 per ton in December 2021, and then contracted in the following month.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Belarus.
From January 2021 to January 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Belarus amounted to +2.6% per month.
Flax Fiber Exports in Russia
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of flax fiber, when their volume decreased by -87.1% to 1.1K tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 664%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 8.3K tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, flax fiber exports contracted sharply to $1.4M in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 655% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $11M, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Flax Fiber Imports in Russia
In 2022, purchases abroad of flax fiber decreased by -28.7% to 5.7K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 135%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 8K tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, flax fiber imports reduced rapidly to $5.7M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $7M, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
