Essential Oils Price in France (FOB) - 2022

The average essential oils export price stood at $68,216 per ton in 2022, dropping by -8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $85,256 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($192,903 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($26,007 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Essential Oils Price in France (CIF) - 2023

The average essential oils import price stood at $53,257 per ton in June 2023, picking up by 8% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 15% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $56,965 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($135K per ton), while the price for Brazil ($17,759 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Essential Oils Exports in France

In 2022, shipments abroad of essential oils decreased by -7.4% to 5.7K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 6.2K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, essential oils exports declined markedly to $387M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 4.5% against the previous year.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of essential oils decreased by -1.9% to 8.7K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year.

In value terms, essential oils imports totaled $419M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
