Cocoa Butter Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average cocoa butter import price amounted to $5,809 per ton, surging by 3.2% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 9.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in August 2023.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($6,864 per ton) and France ($6,044 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($5,178 per ton) and Spain ($5,303 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cocoa Butter Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
The average cocoa butter export price stood at $7,101 per ton in August 2023, approximately reflecting the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 14% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $7,939 per ton. From July 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($7,120 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland stood at $6,852 per ton.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+1.6%).
Cocoa Butter Imports in Italy
For the fourth year in a row, Italy recorded growth in purchases abroad of cocoa butter, which increased by 19% to 52K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, cocoa butter imports fell to $256M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 22%.

In 2022, exports of cocoa butter from Italy expanded sharply to 3.5K tons, increasing by 6.1% on 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 36%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 3.6K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
