Coal Price in Ukraine (CIF) - 2022
The average coal import price stood at $254 per ton in 2022, increasing by 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a moderate expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($368 per ton), while the price for Poland ($168 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Coal Price in Ukraine (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average coal export price amounted to $128 per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coal export price increased by +72.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $140 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($329 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($77 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+14.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Coal Imports in Ukraine
In 2022, imports of coal into Ukraine contracted notably to 4.6M tons, reducing by -74.8% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year.
In value terms, coal imports reduced sharply to $1.2B in 2022. In general, imports saw a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year.
