Cinnamon Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average cinnamon import price amounted to $4,944 per ton, jumping by 17% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2021 an increase of 35% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $5,831 per ton in September 2021; however, from October 2021 to December 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($11,379 per ton), while the price for China ($3,467 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Cinnamon Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2021
In December 2021, the average cinnamon export price amounted to $8,743 per ton, increasing by 47% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2021 an increase of 82% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $9,138 per ton. From June 2021 to December 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In December 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Taiwan (Chinese) ($9,153 per ton) and Japan ($8,937 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($6,893 per ton) and Australia ($7,119 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cinnamon Imports in Malaysia
In 2022, approx. 2.1K tons of cinnamon (canella) were imported into Malaysia; remaining constant against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2.1K tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
In value terms, cinnamon imports declined to $10M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +59.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year.
