Carrot and Turnip Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2023
The average carrot and turnip export price stood at $1,057 per ton in June 2023, surging by 4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated moderate growth from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, carrot and turnip export price increased by +43.4% against February 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 when the average export price increased by 53% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,142 per ton in September 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to June 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($1,715 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($674 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average carrot and turnip import price stood at $605 per ton in June 2023, falling by -4.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 an increase of 29% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $670 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,018 per ton), while the price for Spain ($580 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, shipments abroad of carrots and turnips decreased by -42.2% to 17K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 0.6% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 31K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carrot and turnip exports declined remarkably to $9.9M in 2022. Overall, exports faced a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 4.1% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $16M, and then plummeted in the following year.
