World Consumption of Beer

In 2022, the amount of beer consumed worldwide declined modestly to 181B litres, waning by -1.6% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the consumption volume increased by 5.6%. Over the period under review, global consumption hit record highs at 192B litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The global beer market value stood at $164.3B in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global market reached the maximum level at $174.7B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were China (35B litres), the United States (27B litres) and Brazil (14B litres), with a combined 42% share of global consumption. Russia, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Vietnam, the UK and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the key consuming countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +14.3%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest beer markets worldwide were the United States ($35.7B), China ($21.8B) and Brazil ($8.6B), together accounting for 40% of the global market. Mexico, Germany, the UK, Russia, Spain, Vietnam and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +14.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The countries with the highest levels of beer per capita consumption in 2022 were Poland (97 litres per person), Spain (87 litres per person) and Germany (82 litres per person).

World Production of Beer

Global beer production contracted modestly to 180B litres in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 4.8%. Global production peaked at 192B litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beer production stood at $159.1B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 4.9%. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $173.3B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (35B litres), the United States (23B litres) and Brazil (14B litres), together accounting for 40% of global production. Mexico, Russia, Germany, Vietnam, Spain, Poland, the UK and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Imports

World Imports of Beer

Global beer imports shrank to 17B litres in 2022, declining by -2.5% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at 18B litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer imports dropped slightly to $17.6B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at $17.7B in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports By Country

The United States was the main importing country with an import of about 4.8B litres, which finished at 28% of total imports. France (928M litres) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the UK (875M litres). All these countries together took near 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Italy (752M litres), Germany (652M litres), Russia (579M litres), Spain (527M litres), China (482M litres), the Netherlands (396M litres), the United Arab Emirates (302M litres), Ireland (276M litres), Canada (262M litres) and Australia (261M litres) - together made up 26% of total imports.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Australia (+33.0%), China (+15.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+14.3%), Ireland (+12.4%), Russia (+5.0%), Spain (+4.6%), France (+2.2%), the Netherlands (+2.2%) and Italy (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Australia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2022. The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.1%) and Canada (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+1.9 p.p.) and the United States (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Germany and the UK saw its share reduced by -2% and -2.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($6.7B) constitutes the largest market for imported beer worldwide, comprising 38% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($1B), with a 5.7% share of global imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States stood at +5.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+3.7% per year) and Italy (+0.9% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average beer import price amounted to $1 per litre, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $1 per litre in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1.6 per litre), while the UK ($0.7 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

World Exports of Beer

In 2022, overseas shipments of beer decreased by -1% to 16B litres, falling for the third consecutive year after six years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 17B litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beer exports fell slightly to $16.4B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $16.5B in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Exports By Country

In 2022, Mexico (3.9B litres), distantly followed by the Netherlands (1.8B litres), Belgium (1.6B litres) and Germany (1.5B litres) represented the key exporters of beer, together comprising 55% of total exports. The Czech Republic (554M litres), China (480M litres), Ireland (466M litres), France (462M litres), the United States (395M litres), Poland (392M litres), Italy (371M litres), Spain (362M litres) and Denmark (315M litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to beer exports from Mexico stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Spain (+11.9%), China (+7.8%), Italy (+6.4%), Poland (+6.3%), the Czech Republic (+4.7%), Ireland (+3.6%) and Belgium (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012-2022. Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.1%) and the United States (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mexico (+7.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Germany (-1.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($5.5B) remains the largest beer supplier worldwide, comprising 33% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($2.1B), with a 13% share of global exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 10% share.

In Mexico, beer exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+0.7% per year) and Belgium (+2.1% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The average beer export price stood at $1 per litre in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($1.4 per litre), while the Czech Republic ($0.6 per litre) was amongst the lowest.
