Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27%. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Yemen (3.7M tons), Singapore (2.6M tons) and Russia (1.7M tons), with a combined 24% share of global production.

Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 22M tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures imports fell modestly to $11.4B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $14.3B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports By Country
In 2022, Belgium (3M tons), Ecuador (2.2M tons) and the Netherlands (2.1M tons) was the major importer of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures in the world, generating 61% of total import. The United States (488K tons), Germany (376K tons), India (372K tons), Singapore (356K tons), Gibraltar (342K tons), South Korea (331K tons), China (220K tons), Cyprus (219K tons), the United Arab Emirates (217K tons) and Vietnam (190K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cyprus (with a CAGR of +140.5%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($2.7B), Ecuador ($2.5B) and the Netherlands ($1.9B) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 62% of global imports. The United States, India, Germany, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam, Cyprus, Gibraltar, China and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Among the main importing countries, Cyprus, with a CAGR of +130.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
The average aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures import price stood at $960 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight descent. Global import price peaked at $1,085 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($1,267 per ton), while Gibraltar ($551 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures decreased by -15.9% to 17M tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at 25M tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures exports expanded notably to $14.6B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 46%. The global exports peaked at $15.4B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports By Country
In 2022, Yemen (3.6M tons), distantly followed by India (1.5M tons), the Netherlands (1.5M tons), Germany (1.1M tons) and Turkey (1.1M tons) represented the key exporters of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures, together achieving 51% of total exports. The UK (695K tons), Japan (678K tons), Angola (583K tons), Thailand (546K tons), South Korea (537K tons), Belgium (530K tons), Russia (444K tons) and France (371K tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures exports from Yemen stood at +34.1%. At the same time, Turkey (+186.7%), India (+54.1%), Japan (+14.8%), Russia (+13.9%), the UK (+8.5%) and South Korea (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +186.7% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.1%), the Netherlands (-4.2%), Belgium (-4.5%), Thailand (-5.2%) and Angola (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Yemen (+19 p.p.), India (+8.8 p.p.), Turkey (+6.1 p.p.), Japan (+2.6 p.p.), Russia (+1.6 p.p.) and the UK (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Germany, Belgium, Thailand, Angola and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -3.7%, -4.3%, -5.4% and -10% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Yemen ($2.1B), India ($1.6B) and the Netherlands ($1.5B) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 36% of global exports. Turkey, Germany, the UK, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Belgium, Russia, France and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +161.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
The average aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures export price stood at $843 per ton in 2022, jumping by 33% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $983 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($1,104 per ton), while Angola ($404 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
