The average argon export price stood at $2.3 per cubic meter in June 2023, with an increase of 31% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, argon export price increased by +31.4% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 an increase of 49% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in June 2023.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Angola ($2.8 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Spain stood at $2.3 per cubic meter.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+5.1%).

In June 2023, the average argon import price amounted to $980 per thousand cubic meters, with a decrease of -13.5% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a moderate increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, argon import price decreased by -13.5% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 38% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1.1 per cubic meter in May 2023, and then reduced in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($1.7 per cubic meter), while the price for Belgium ($395 per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Argon Exports in Portugal
In 2022, argon exports from Portugal rose to 2.8M cubic meters, with an increase of 2.5% on the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 11%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
