Canada's September 2023 Imports of Wallpaper Reach $2.1M, Spiking by 24% to Set a New Record

In September 2023, supplies from abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 36% to 136 tons, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, imports increased by +47.1% against July 2023 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wallpaper imports soared to $2.1M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% from September 2022 to September 2023; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain months. Imports by Country

In September 2023, China (76 tons) constituted the largest wallpaper supplier to Canada, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, wallpaper imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (34 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (14 tons), with a 10% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +12.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (-0.3% per month) and the UK (+2.9% per month).

In value terms, the United States ($904K) constituted the largest supplier of wallpaper to Canada, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($370K), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from the United States totaled +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the UK (+3.4% per month) and China (+5.9% per month).

Imports by Type

In September 2023, wallpaper and similar wall coverings, coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics (93 tons) constituted the largest type of wallpaper supplied to Canada, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, wallpaper and similar wall coverings, coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, wallpaper and similar wall coverings and window transparencies, of paper, other than coated or decorated with plastics (44 tons), twofold.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of wallpaper and similar wall coverings, coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics amounted to +2.8%.

In value terms, wallpaper and similar wall coverings, coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics ($1.3M) and wallpaper and similar wall coverings and window transparencies, of paper, other than coated or decorated with plastics ($782K) appeared to be the most imported types of wallpaper and wall coverings in Canada.

Import Prices by Country

In September 2023, the wallpaper price stood at $15,081 per ton (CIF, Canada), waning by -8.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $19,144 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($52,678 per ton), while the price for China ($3,354 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
