In December 2023, the amount of cheese exported from Australia declined notably to 9.2K tons, waning by -19.9% compared with the month before. Overall, exports saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 when exports increased by 52% month-to-month.

In value terms, cheese exports dropped markedly to $43M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. Exports by Country

Japan (3.4K tons), China (1.8K tons) and Malaysia (727 tons) were the main destinations of cheese exports from Australia, together accounting for 65% of total exports.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +6.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Japan ($15M), China ($7.7M) and Malaysia ($3.8M) appeared to be the largest markets for cheese exported from Australia worldwide, together accounting for 62% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +4.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Exports by Type

Unripened or uncured cheese (7.9K tons) was the largest type of cheese exported from Australia, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, unripened or uncured cheese exceeded the volume of the second product type, processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (1.3K tons), sixfold.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of unripened or uncured cheese was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (+1.1% per month) and cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) (+43.3% per month).

In value terms, unripened or uncured cheese ($35M) remains the largest type of cheese exported from Australia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) ($8M), with a 19% share of total exports.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of unripened or uncured cheese stood at -1.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (+1.3% per month) and cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) (+40.4% per month).

Export Prices by Country

In December 2023, the cheese price amounted to $4,650 per ton (FOB, Australia), which is down by -6.3% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2023 when the average export price increased by 13% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $5,753 per ton. From August 2023 to December 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In December 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Singapore ($5,386 per ton) and Indonesia ($5,260 per ton), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($4,107 per ton) and China ($4,240 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
